Lost was known for years within the Linkin Park fan community as "Thoughts That Take Away My Pride". On The Making of Meteora DVD, fans noticed a five second clip of Chester singing "thoughts that take away my pride, trapped in places deep inside" over an instrumental. The song quickly became a regular Linkin Park Underground wishlist item, but never surfaced.

The song continued to make small appearances over time via LPTV or LPUTV, but never saw a release. When Lost released on February 10, 2023, as a lead single for Meteora's 20th anniversary, fans recognized the instrumental but noticed that the "thoughts that take away my pride" lyric section was not in the song. During a Discord Q&A on February 11, 2023, fans confirmed this with Mike, Joe, and Dave, when bringing up the fan title of the song. Though the band members were initially confused, Mike was able to confirm that the "thoughts that take away my pride" lyric was a scrapped idea for the bridge of Lost.

"The inspiration was looking back on memories that you get sucked into. And you just get immersed in that nostalgia. But it's bittersweet, it's a mixed bag. Because there's good stuff in there, too. Things aren't black and white or cut and dry. And that's what I like about the lyrics of this song. The only reason it didn't go on is because it had the same intensity of Numb."

I don't think that I'll ever truly manage the sadness that is having lost Chester. Linkin Park is and will forever be my favorite band, and there's times I binge all their songs over and over, and times that I can't bring myself to listen to any of their music because it hurts too much. This song is a great reminder to how wonderful they are, and to keep them in our hearts--All the members of the group mean the world to me.

When I first watched the video, I felt... unsettled about the images, AI's use made me feel reasonably worried, but after a long enough time I kinda appreciate the surreality it matches to the song--It really does feel like Memories in your head, that you can get lost in thinking and overthinking about, until the pictures in your mind fade and dissolve into something that you remember, but imperfectly. Like a face that you can't exactly get right. It's kinda powerful like that.

To be fair, it wasn't really rejected, is was more a redundancy problem. Mike Shinoda went over why the song didn't make it and apparently it sounded too "close" to Numb, with the same emotion and intensity. I still would have listened to it doe 😢

Finally they chose to put only 12 songs on the album and they wanted there to be a lot of variety in the songs. Lost and Numb are actually very similar and it is understandable why they didn't include it on the album, but I don't know many groups capable of throwing away a song as good as Lost just because it resembles another song on the album.

Chesters lyrics hit a lot harder now, knowing how it ended. Linkin park’s minutes to midnight was the first time I heard music that I could relate to in a dark way. Definitely helped shape my life and get me though some dark times.

As someone who suffered from severe depression for many years in my life, I totally feel this song. But there is healing to this. It's called not running away from the pain. Don't hide it! Discover it, feel it, talk to it and then forgive!
When I hear this song, I'm so glad I don't have to deal with this anymore but still it feels recognizable.

@@Solider7 Unpopular opinion but I think that people unconsciously actually drive depressed people more into suicide than not, because they only really make it worse. They tend to belittle, question and ridicule depression, which makes the depressed more and more alienated. Even being loving and kind can make a depressed feel more and more isolated, because they are unable to link up to that.
The only person that can truly help a severely depressed person is that person himself. Everything else is just a way to recognize that.

Linken park was a large part of my growing up, i wasnt very popular and often times it was just me my discman and the hybrid theory and meteora. Knew all the lyrics and it helped me in such dark times knowing that i wasnt alone and others were feeling what i felt. They were REAAAAALLY big back in Hybrid Theory/Meteora/M2M times here in Germany. Like probably one of the most popular rock groups at the time (although there were bigger genres, but Linkin Park was one of the very few rock groups that actually made it into the mainstream). "Impactful" doesn't quite do it justice man. Half my wardrobe was Linkin Park merch as a teenager :D

I actually believe Linkin Park was the most impactful band back in the early 2000's anywhere in the world. I actually went to one of his last concerts in the Ziggo Dome in NL right before he decided he was needed in heaven.

Same for me brother.
I got “lucky” and had head trauma so most of those memories are gone. But every once in a while a bad memory pops up.
Be strong and look forward. Easier said than done but look forward to the next five min then the next hour then the next day and etc. the past is the past you are here now.

I heard Mike shinoda say that they recorded this 20 years ago in a short, and had to hear it, wasn't sure what I was gunna expect... Hearing a dead man's voice in a video released 11 months ago is a crazy thing. I teared up thinking "I'm a lucky guy" and, well, it's One More Light all over again. Almost 7 years ago and it still hurts so much. When they released this song it made me so sad hearing his voice again after all this time.
