Mark The Graves
Linkin Park Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There's a fragile game you play
With the ghosts of yesterday
If we can't let go, we'll never say goodbye
No trace of what remains
No stones to mark the graves
Only memories we thought we could deny

There's so much more to lose
Than the pain I put you through
In my carelessness, I left you in the dark
And the blood may wash away
But the scars will never fade
At least I know somehow I made a mark

In the dark, in the light
Nothing left, nothing right
In the dark, in the light
Nothing left, nothing right

In the dark, in the light
Nothing left, nothing right
In the dark, in the light
Nothing left, nothing right

Nothing right
Nothing right

Overall Meaning

The song "Mark The Graves" by Linkin Park explores the idea of the fragility of life and the consequences of our actions. The opening lines, "There's a fragile game you play, with the ghosts of yesterday," suggest that we are always holding onto the past in some way, and that this can be detrimental to moving forward. If we hold onto the past too tightly, we will never be able to say goodbye and move on.

The line "No stones to mark the graves, only memories we thought we could deny," emphasizes the idea that we cannot escape our past, even though we try to bury it. Our memories will always remain, even if we refuse to acknowledge them. This can also be interpreted to mean that without closure, we cannot properly move on, as we are unable to give a proper burial to the things we have lost.

The second verse is from the perspective of the one who caused pain to someone else. They admit that they were careless and left their loved one in the dark, causing them to be scarred emotionally. The line "And the blood may wash away, but the scars will never fade," suggests that even though we can physically heal, emotional scars can last forever. However, the singer finds some solace in the fact that they have made their mark, suggesting that their impact on the world, no matter how small, will never be erased.

Overall, "Mark The Graves" is a solemn reminder of the weight of our actions and the importance of finding closure in order to move on.

[Verse 1: Chester Bennington]
There's a fragile game we play
With the ghosts of yesterday
If we can't let go, we'll never say goodbye
No trace of what remains
No stones to mark the graves
Only memories we thought we could deny

[Verse 2: Chester Bennington]
There was so much more to lose
Than the pain I put you through
In my carelessness, I left you in the dark
And the blood may wash away
But the scars will never fade
At least I know, somehow, I made a mark

[Chorus: Chester Bennington]
In the dark, in the light
Nothing left, nothing right
In the dark, in the light
Nothing left, nothing right

[Chorus: Chester Bennington]
In the dark, in the light
Nothing left, nothing right
In the dark, in the light
Nothing left, nothing right!
Nothing right! Nothing right!

The Hunting Party is the most underrated album of LP. Well, maybe it will get the deserved attention later, just like A Thousands Suns.

@sabyasachiroy9229

I agree with you....ATS was a masterpiece...wish people appreciated it then

@gamerspitt8089

i was recording linkin park on VHS since they started to play, loved their sound, Huge fan. But Thousand suns and hunting party where terrible albums in my opinion. Mark the Graves was the only song i liked.

@GamersPit You're entitled to your opinion, I'm glad you're not rude about it, and respect the band.

@gamerspitt8089

@Jeremy Hammond I don't think there will ever be a vocalist like chester, they belong in the pantheon of the biggest bands on earth. All those guys singing LP songs on the bowl concept where cool, but no even close to Chester's level. I'm listening to Meteora, reanimation and hybrid theoryt =every day for the past 19 years, cant think of a more unique sound than LP had.... but thye really went south with their new stuff, totally not my vibe, and sadly im not alone on this T_T

@jeremyhammond689

@GamersPit What stuff? Minutes to Midnight? A Thousand Suns? Living Things, The Hunting Party (duh), One More Light? Is it all of them? Do you not respect the fact that they've evolved? You act like these albums were mistakes. If you don't like them, don't listen to them. Besides, Linkin Park won't even make music anymore, so complaining will achieve nothing. It's sad, but we won't ever get the sound of early LP again. These other albums are all we have. If you want Nu Metal, listen to System of a Down, or Deftones, or Korn. That's the best thing you've got.
