The band's current lineup comprises vocalist/rhythm guitarist/keyboardist Mike Shinoda, lead guitarist Brad Delson, bassist Dave Farrell, DJ/turntablist Joe Hahn and drummer Rob Bourdon, all of whom are founding members. Vocalists Mark Wakefield and Chester Bennington are former members of the band. Categorized as alternative rock, Linkin Park's earlier music spanned a fusion of heavy metal and hip hop, while their later music features more electronica and pop elements.

Formed in 1996, Linkin Park rose to international fame with their debut studio album, Hybrid Theory (2000), which became certified Diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Released during the peak of the nu metal scene, the album's singles' heavy airplay on MTV led the singles "One Step Closer", "Crawling" and "In the End" all to chart highly on the US Mainstream Rock chart. The lattermost also crossed over to the nation's Billboard Hot 100. Their second album, Meteora (2003), continued the band's success. The band explored experimental sounds on their third album, Minutes to Midnight (2007). By the end of the decade, Linkin Park was among the most successful and popular rock acts.

The band continued to explore a wider variation of musical types on their fourth album, A Thousand Suns (2010), layering their music with more electronic sounds. The band's fifth album, Living Things (2012), combined musical elements from all of their previous records. Their sixth album, The Hunting Party (2014), returned to a heavier rock sound, and their seventh album, One More Light (2017), was a substantially more pop-oriented record. Linkin Park went on a hiatus when longtime lead vocalist Bennington died in July 2017. In April 2022, Shinoda revealed the band was neither working on new music nor planning on touring for the foreseeable future.

Linkin Park is among the best-selling bands of the 21st century and the world's best-selling music artists, having sold over 100 million records worldwide. They have won two Grammy Awards, six American Music Awards, two Billboard Music Awards, four MTV Video Music Awards, 10 MTV Europe Music Awards and three World Music Awards. In 2003, MTV2 named Linkin Park the sixth-greatest band of the music video era and the third-best of the new millennium. Billboard ranked Linkin Park No. 19 on the Best Artists of the Decade list. In 2012, the band was voted as the greatest artist of the 2000s in a Bracket Madness poll on VH1. In 2014, the band was declared as "The Biggest Rock Band in the World Right Now" by Kerrang!.

Hybrid theory is one of the best albums ever not just cause of all the hits but the effort that went into every song...the instruments the metal screech and hip hop infusions with record scratching and piano deserves more credit for changing the genre...anyone saying it's just angst underrated the effort put into each unique sound..meteora is lazier and thus can get that criticism....but hybrid theory was everyone being introduced to linkin park...and it's perfect for the new millieuim as a new wave of music

I know this song is probably referring to a bad relationship, but ever since I was six years old, I always associated this song to my abusive dad. Listening to this was like the screaming voice inside, just put into words for me. I was abused because he was abused. "You want to share what you've been through, you live what you learned" really stood out to me.

I always thought of it that way too because my dad used, manipulated , physically and mentally abused me and more so I always thought since he wanted to act like he was so good “you have to act like your someone” stood out to me because he couldn’t look at the real him. That's the great thing about art: It's whatever you make of it. In the end (nice reference) it's not that important what the "real" point was, it's about what every single individual makes of it. And if you feel like this song speaks to you 1:1... I really think that's what LP always wanted to do. To touch people. To get them to think about their lifes.

People often say Hybrid Theory is filled with teen angst and edge, but years later, looking back, I find this song really mature. Probably the most mature song of their catalogue, tells a realistic story about a bad relationship and I think it is not explicit enough to be obvious about it.

This album...has a huge spot in my music life, particularly this song. The lyrics scream out to every possible negative issue one could go through in a relationship, at home, or even at work! Everyone saying that this whole album is a scream-o about daddy issues CLEARLY has/had them.

This track is spectacular to listen to a few years later. For me the "forfeit the game" verses sung by Mike were matching my helplessness i felt in highschool, now 7 years later they make me feel proud i can win the race, i can keep up the pace and i'll last till the end, from saddening to empowering, thats the gift of LP

The pain inside of Chester probably wasn't something anyone could relate to completely because nobody knows you better than yourself (I'm saying nobody knew Chester better than himself, and he was probably just as human than he really gave off by looks/etc.) Even so, that doesn't mean we can't feel his pain. His pain can't be completely related to on all levels even if he explained what goes on inside of him. I do know I can still feel some of his pain though... and I'll never forget him. Chester has saved me from my demons... Thank you for being here Chester... we all will appreciate you forever. ❤

This song got me through an extremely tough time in a company I worked for years ago...this company was so brutal and so competitive...anxiety was always at an all time high...this song helped me focus and I became number 11 in the world in my company because of the focus of this song (and some others)...but listening back this song had a major impact.....I had to tap into very deep emotions to survive that era.
