Until it's Gone
Linkin Park Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

A fire needs a space to burn
A breath to build a glow
I've heard it said a thousand times
But now I know

That you don't know what you've got
Oh, you don't know what you've got
No, you don't know what you've got
Until it's gone
Until it's gone
Until it's gone

I thought I kept you safe and sound
I thought I made you strong
But something made me realize
That I was wrong

'Cause finding what you got sometimes
Means finding it alone
And I can finally see your light
When I let go

'Cause you don't know what you've got
Until it's gone
Until it's gone
Until it's gone

Until it's gone
Until it's gone
Until it's gone
Until it's gone
Until it's gone

'Cause you don't know what you've got
Oh, you don't know what you've got
No, you don't know what you've got
It's your battle to be fought
No, you don't know what you've got
'Til it's gone

'Til it's gone
'Til it's gone

Overall Meaning

The first verse of Linkin Park's Until It's Gone compares a fire to a relationship that needs to be nurtured in order for it to grow and flourish. Without the breath of a person or the space for them to be themselves, the fire dies out. The next verse is about the realization that the things we take for granted can easily slip away from us. The singer of the song thought that they were doing everything they could to keep something safe and strong, only to find out that they were wrong. Sometimes, it takes losing something to truly appreciate what we had.

The chorus repeats the central theme of the song - that we don't know what we have until it's gone. The repetition of the line "Until it's gone" emphasizes this point even further, driving it home to the listener. The final verse is about how difficult it can be to find something that we've lost, but once we do, it's like seeing light where there was once only darkness. The message of the song is clear - don't take the people or things in your life for granted, because you never know when they might be taken from you.

Overall, the lyrics to Until It's Gone are about the importance of appreciating what we have in life and cherishing it, rather than waiting until it's too late to realize how lucky we are.

@reels2riffs

Personally, I see it this way:

-Their first album: "Hybrid Theory EP" (1999,), was a GREAT insight into what the band would be known for, a well-made blend of rap and rock

-Their second album" "Hybrid Theory" (Bonus Track Version, 2000,), was the first Linkin Park album I ever listened to, back when I got into them after hearing the song "Runaway," from an old promo of Shadow the Hedgehog. Ah, memories. Most of the songs have a nice blend of rap, and rock, with more emphasis on screaming, and more punk this time.

-Their third album: "Reanimation" (2002,), was mostly just new remixes of the songs from Hybrid Theory(2000,), but overall, I actually quite like some of the remixes. Granted the whole album isn't perfect ,and some of the remixes are NOTHING compared to the original songs, but overall.......meh.

-Their fourth album: "Meteora" (2003, Bonus Track Version,), is probably my favorite album of theirs of all time. SO many catchy songs(Breaking the Habit, Numb, Easier To Run, Faint,), that I grew up with back in elementary school and middle school, and this is the album that PUT Linkin Park on the map. A perfect blend of rock, rap, some punk here and there, and GREAt techno. Overall, their finest work, which has YET to be topped.

-Their fifth album: "Collision Course" (2004, Deluxe Version,), was ok. I like the remixes, and granted, they featured Jay-Z, who I despise now, but this was back when people could actually tolerate his music somewhat. But, Will Smith does indeed save this album by giving us an AWESOME remix of Numb and his song Party Starter. Overall, a decent album.

-Their sixth album: "Minutes To Midnight" (2007, Deluxe Version,), was a slight improvement in terms of their musical direction. Granted, this is probably their softest album, with rock elements being an occurrence here and there in a few songs, but overall, it was a good album.

-Their seventh, and most mixed album, "A Thousand Suns" (2010, Deluxe Version,), continues to cause SO much controversy to THIS day, mostly because the band took SO many new directions with this album. Focusing on more alternative rock, rap, and HIGH emphasis on electro punk rock. Overall, I actually quite like it. I hated it upon its release, but looking back on it, and giving it a good listen a few more times, the album is actually VERY AWESOME! I LOVE their experimentation, and most of the songs are nice to hear. Overall, SO underrated!

-Their eigth album, "Living Things," (2012,), saw them return to their rock elements, but still had emphasis on electric tecnho punk. Overall, a nice comeback, but could have been better.

-Their ninth album, "Recharged" (2013,), WAS ABSOLUTE GARBAGE! It took all the songs we loved from "Living Things" and turned them into garbage substitute dub step remixes. HORRIBLE ALBUM............except for the new song: "A Light That Never Comes."

-Their tenth album, "The Hunting Party" (2014,), was the album fans had been hoping for. Taking away MOST of the electric punk and techno rock that left fans mixed, this album focuses CORELY on Linkin Park's: punk rock, rock, and rap. Most of the songs on this album are flawless, and in fact, is as good as Meteora. Yeah, I said it. Deal with it! The songs have that classic Linkin Park feel, and it makes you feel all nostalgic all over again! Overall, this IS the Linkin Park album fans had been hoping for! NEAR FLAWLESS!

Oh, and P.S., in terms of their movie songs, I love ALL of them.

-"What I've Done" - theme from Transformers (2007)
-"New Divide" - theme from Transformers 2: Revenge of The Fallen (2009)
-"Iridescent" - theme from Transformers 3: Dark of The Moon (2011)
-"Roads Untraveled" - ending theme song from Need For Speed (2014)
All of these songs are PERFECT, FLAWLESS, SOLID ROCK SONG THAT MAKE THE MOVIES LISTE DHERE EVEN MORE AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

me5sick how are they being hypocrites?

@DavidHutchinson0713

Ace of Death 02 Well, probably because he thought EVERYONE are haters who was like "we hate your new shit, LP is dead" before Chester's death, but suddenly went "We shouldn't have hated this, this album (one of the post-Meteora albums, especially One More Light) is actually a masterpiece" after he died. And that made everyone sounded like hypocrites.
Not everyone is like that, however. I, for one, was quite fond of One More Light for how it is (a lyrical album), although I must admit it could have been better. And A Thousand Suns is my favorite album.
