Formed in 1996, Linkin Park rose to international fame with their debut studio album, Hybrid Theory (2000), which became certified Diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Released during the peak of the nu metal scene, the album's singles' heavy airplay on MTV led the singles "One Step Closer", "Crawling" and "In the End" all to chart highly on the US Mainstream Rock chart. The lattermost also crossed over to the nation's Billboard Hot 100. Their second album, Meteora (2003), continued the band's success. The band explored experimental sounds on their third album, Minutes to Midnight (2007). By the end of the decade, Linkin Park was among the most successful and popular rock acts.
The band continued to explore a wider variation of musical types on their fourth album, A Thousand Suns (2010), layering their music with more electronic sounds. The band's fifth album, Living Things (2012), combined musical elements from all of their previous records. Their sixth album, The Hunting Party (2014), returned to a heavier rock sound, and their seventh album, One More Light (2017), was a substantially more pop-oriented record. Linkin Park went on a hiatus when longtime lead vocalist Bennington died in July 2017. In April 2022, Shinoda revealed the band was neither working on new music nor planning on touring for the foreseeable future.
Linkin Park is among the best-selling bands of the 21st century and the world's best-selling music artists, having sold over 100 million records worldwide. They have won two Grammy Awards, six American Music Awards, two Billboard Music Awards, four MTV Video Music Awards, 10 MTV Europe Music Awards and three World Music Awards. In 2003, MTV2 named Linkin Park the sixth-greatest band of the music video era and the third-best of the new millennium. Billboard ranked Linkin Park No. 19 on the Best Artists of the Decade list. In 2012, the band was voted as the greatest artist of the 2000s in a Bracket Madness poll on VH1. In 2014, the band was declared as "The Biggest Rock Band in the World Right Now" by Kerrang!.

Before somebody else
Takes you out of the frame
And puts your name to shame
Cover up your face
You can't run the race
The pace is too fast
You just won't last
You love the way I look at you
While taking pleasure in the awful things you put me through
You take away if I give in
My life, my pride is broken
You like to think you're never wrong
(You live what you've learned)
You have to act like you're someone
(You live what you've learned)
You want someone to hurt like you
(You live what you've learned)
You want to share what you've been through
(You live what you've learned)
You love the things I say I'll do
The way I'll hurt myself again just to get back at you
You take away when I give in
My life, my pride is broken
You like to think you're never wrong
(You live what you've learned)
You have to act like you're someone
(You live what you've learned)
You want someone to hurt like you
(You live what you've learned)
You want to share what you've been through
(You live what you've learned)
Forfeit the game
Before somebody else
Takes you out of the frame
And puts your name to shame

The lyrics of "Points of Authority" are about someone who has been emotionally and mentally manipulated to the point where they have lost control of their life. The song describes the feeling of being in a relationship with someone who takes pleasure in seeing the singer suffer. The singer is unable to break free from this cycle of abuse and is stuck in a twisted game where their abuser is always one step ahead of them.
The chorus of the song encourages the singer to "forfeit the game" before their abuser "takes [them] out of the frame and puts [their] name to shame." The pace of their relationship is too fast for the singer to keep up with, and they are only hurting themselves by trying to win. The second verse addresses the abuser directly, accusing them of wanting to hurt others because they have been hurt in the past. The repeated phrase "you live what you've learned" suggests that the abuser is perpetuating a cycle of abuse that they themselves experienced.
Overall, "Points of Authority" is a powerful song about the devastating effects of emotional abuse and the struggle to break free from a toxic relationship.

Hybrid Theory is a absolute classic. Those who say that it's an album that is filled with teen angst are dead wrong. I'm nearing my thirties and I still find this album to be a timeless classic and is adored by all ages
@JackPoppy
I am in my thirties, and let me tell you, this album still rings true as an anthem of my generation sending a message to the boomers in my life. They like to think they're never wrong, they like someone to hurt like they do. When faced with compassion, they lash out.
Yes, our generation created emo music, but it was never meant as self pity; it was meant as a message for love and compassion.
@razkable
Hybrid theory is one of the best albums ever not just cause of all the hits but the effort that went into every song...the instruments the metal screech and hip hop infusions with record scratching and piano deserves more credit for changing the genre...anyone saying it's just angst underrated the effort put into each unique sound..meteora is lazier and thus can get that criticism....but hybrid theory was everyone being introduced to linkin park...and it's perfect for the new millieuim as a new wave of music
@WFly101
â@@JackPoppy this is Nu Metal not Emo lol
@phanatic215
â@@JackPoppyI saw a dude in the market with an LP shirt on, and I said Hybrid Theory still bangs to this day. We stood there next to the apples and talked about how awesome Linkin Park was for 20 minutes. Complete stranger, but we bonded over music.
