Leave Out All the Rest
Linkin Park Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I dreamed I was missing
You were so scared
But no one would listen
'Cause no one else cared
After my dreaming
I woke with this fear
What am I leaving
When I'm done here?
So, if you're asking me, I want you to know

When my time comes
Forget the wrong that I've done
Help me leave behind some reasons to be missed
And don't resent me
And when you're feeling empty
Keep me in your memory
Leave out all the rest
Leave out all the rest

Don't be afraid
I've taken my beating
I've shared what I've made
I'm strong on the surface
Not all the way through
I've never been perfect
But neither have you
So, if you're asking me, I want you to know

When my time comes
Forget the wrong that I've done
Help me leave behind some reasons to be missed
And don't resent me
And when you're feeling empty
Keep me in your memory
Leave out all the rest
Leave out all the rest

Forgetting
All the hurt inside you've learned to hide so well
Pretending
Someone else can come and save me from myself
I can't be who you are

When my time comes
Forget the wrong that I've done
Help me leave behind some reasons to be missed
And don't resent me
And when you're feeling empty
Keep me in your memory
Leave out all the rest
Leave out all the rest

Forgetting
All the hurt inside you've learned to hide so well
Pretending
Someone else can come and save me from myself

I can't be who you are
I can't be who you are

Overall Meaning

The song "Leave Out All the Rest" by Linkin Park is about coming to grips with mortality and the legacy a person leaves behind. In the first verse, the singer dreams that he was missing and nobody cared, which suggests that he fears that he will be forgotten after he dies. He wakes up with a sense of urgency and asks those around him to remember him for the good things he has done in life and not to resent him for any mistakes he made. The second verse reflects on the singer's imperfections and invites the listener to relate to those shortcomings, emphasizing that everyone has room to improve. The chorus then repeats the message of leaving behind a good memory and forgetting any negative aspects of the past.

The song's bridge adds an extra layer to the message by describing how people often hide their inner pain and pretend to be someone else who is happier and more hopeful. It suggests that the singer wants to be remembered as he truly was, including his flaws and vulnerabilities. The repeating of the phrase "I can't be who you are" in the end of the song reinforces the idea that each person is unique, and that it is essential to stay true to oneself.

You probably don't know how music, or any art for that matter, helps out people going through depression.

LP helped me cope up with it because of their lyrics, and Chester's vocals bringing the music to life really helped me during my depression during my high school years.

I won my battle against depression with the help of LP(and others), but Chester lost.

RIP, Chester.
