Formed in 1996, Linkin Park rose to international fame with their debut studio album, Hybrid Theory (2000), which became certified Diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Released during the peak of the nu metal scene, the album's singles' heavy airplay on MTV led the singles "One Step Closer", "Crawling" and "In the End" all to chart highly on the US Mainstream Rock chart. The lattermost also crossed over to the nation's Billboard Hot 100. Their second album, Meteora (2003), continued the band's success. The band explored experimental sounds on their third album, Minutes to Midnight (2007). By the end of the decade, Linkin Park was among the most successful and popular rock acts.
The band continued to explore a wider variation of musical types on their fourth album, A Thousand Suns (2010), layering their music with more electronic sounds. The band's fifth album, Living Things (2012), combined musical elements from all of their previous records. Their sixth album, The Hunting Party (2014), returned to a heavier rock sound, and their seventh album, One More Light (2017), was a substantially more pop-oriented record. Linkin Park went on a hiatus when longtime lead vocalist Bennington died in July 2017. In April 2022, Shinoda revealed the band was neither working on new music nor planning on touring for the foreseeable future.
Linkin Park is among the best-selling bands of the 21st century and the world's best-selling music artists, having sold over 100 million records worldwide. They have won two Grammy Awards, six American Music Awards, two Billboard Music Awards, four MTV Video Music Awards, 10 MTV Europe Music Awards and three World Music Awards. In 2003, MTV2 named Linkin Park the sixth-greatest band of the music video era and the third-best of the new millennium. Billboard ranked Linkin Park No. 19 on the Best Artists of the Decade list. In 2012, the band was voted as the greatest artist of the 2000s in a Bracket Madness poll on VH1. In 2014, the band was declared as "The Biggest Rock Band in the World Right Now" by Kerrang!.

What do you mean that you don't know?
It's obvious you think you do
You think it's best to choose loneliness
Afraid of what's right in front of you
Go
What can I do when you turn away
Except close the door
And figure out how I'm gonna try again
Play it through to be with you
But alone again it's how it's gonna end
Go (you go)
Making my move so carefully (alone)
Feel it when you stare at me (again)
Making my move so carefully
Feel it when you stare at me
Making my move so carefully (you go)
Feel it when you stare at me
Making my move so carefully (away)
Feel it when you stare at me
We could have been so wrong
Guess you'll never find out
But I guess you'll never find out
I can't do anything but say
It won't be the same as yesterday
You say you're afraid to be with me
And I just pray you let the fear go away
Go
And I can't see you as a friend
So now I know how this has got to end
Make it so nobody wins
Ending this before it begins
Go (you go)
Making my move so carefully (alone)
Feel it when you stare at me (again)
Making my move so carefully
Feel it when you stare at me
Making my move so carefully (you go)
Feel it when you stare at me
Making my move so carefully (away)
Feel it when you stare at me
We could have been so wrong
But I guess you'll never find out
But I guess you'll never find out
But I guess you'll never find out
But I guess you'll never find out
Alone again, you go away
We could have been so wrong
We could have been so wrong
But I guess you'll never find out (we)
But I guess you'll never find out (could have)
But I guess you'll never find out (been)
But I guess you'll never find out (so wrong)
But I guess you'll never find out
But I guess you'll never find out
But I guess you'll never find out
But I guess you'll never find out
But I guess you'll never find out (we)
But I guess you'll never find out (could have)
But I guess you'll never find out (been)
But I guess you'll never find out (so wrong)
But I know you'll never find out
But I know you'll never find out
But I know you'll never find out
But I know you'll never find out
The lyrics of "Could Have Been" by Linkin Park touch upon themes of missed opportunities, unfulfilled potential, and the pain of unreciprocated feelings. The song paints a picture of a relationship where one person is hesitant to fully commit, choosing loneliness or fear over the possibility of being together. The repeated phrase "Alone again, you go away" sets the tone of solitude and rejection, highlighting the sense of longing and disappointment in the singer.
In the first paragraph, the lyrics suggest a struggle between two individuals, with one expressing confusion and uncertainty while the other feels the weight of their unspoken emotions. The lines "What can I do when you turn away / Except close the door" capture the helplessness and resignation of the singer in the face of the other person's reluctance. The repetition of "Go" emphasizes the act of pulling away or distancing oneself, symbolizing a barrier between the two parties.
As the song progresses, the singer reflects on their attempts to bridge the gap and make a connection, only to encounter resistance and rejection. The lines "Making my move so carefully / Feel it when you stare at me" convey a sense of cautiousness and vulnerability in approaching the other person, only to be met with uncertainty and hesitation. The repetition of "Making my move so carefully" reflects the meticulous effort put forth by the singer, despite the inevitable outcome of being left alone once again.
The chorus serves as a poignant lament for what could have been, a recognition of the lost potential and the sorrow of unfulfilled love. The repeated phrase "We could have been so wrong" alludes to the idea that taking a chance on love could have led to a different outcome, but the fear and hesitation of one party prevent that possibility from being realized. The repeated refrain "But I guess you'll never find out" underscores the finality of the situation, the acceptance that some truths may remain unspoken and some paths unexplored.
In the closing moments of the song, the repetition of "But I guess you'll never find out" and "But I know you'll never find out" juxtaposes the uncertainty of external understanding with the internal realization and acceptance of the singer. The unresolved tension and unspoken emotions linger as the song fades out, leaving a sense of longing and resignation in its wake. Overall, "Could Have Been" lyrically captures the bittersweet experience of unrequited love and the pain of what might have been.

Alone again, you go away
Once again, you choose to be by yourself
What do you mean that you don't know?
Why pretend you are unsure when it's clear you do?
It's obvious you think you do
It's clear that you believe you understand
You think it's best to choose loneliness
You believe solitude is the better option
Afraid of what's right in front of you
Scared of the reality directly in front of you
Making my move so carefully
Proceeding cautiously with my actions
Feel it when you stare at me
Sensing your gaze upon me
We could have been so wrong
Our potential mistakes are unknown
But I guess you'll never find out
Unfortunately, you may never realize
But I know you'll never find out
But I am aware that you will never discover

Alone again... You go away
What do you mean that you don't know,
It's obvious you think you do
You think it's best to choose loneliness,
Afraid of what's right in front of you
(Go......)
What can I do when you turn away
except close the door,
Figure out how I'm gonna try again
Play it through to be with you
but alone again is how it's gonna end
(Then... go...)
Making my moves so carefully,
I feel it when you stare at me
(Alone again...)
Making my moves so carefully,
I feel it when you stare at me
(You go away...)
Making my moves so carefully,
I feel it when you stare at me
Making my moves so carefully,
I feel it when you stare at me
We could have been so wrong...
(But I guess you'll never find out,
But I guess you'll never find out)
I can't do anything that would say,
It won't be the same as yesterday
Say you're afraid to be with me
and I just pray you let the fear go away
(Go......)
And I can't see you as a friend
so now I know how this has got to end
Make it so nobody wins,
Ending this before it begins
(Go... go...)
Making my moves so carefully,
I feel it when you stare at me
(Alone again...)
Making my moves so carefully,
I feel it when you stare at me
(You go away...)
Making my moves so carefully,
I feel it when you stare at me
Making my moves so carefully,
I feel it when you stare at me
We could have been so wrong...
(But I guess you'll never find out,
But I guess you'll never find out
(But I guess you'll never find out,
But I guess you'll never find out)
Alone again... We go away
We could have been so wrong...
We could have been so wrong...
We could have been so wrong...
(But I guess you'll never find out,
But I guess you'll never find out)
(But I guess you'll never find out,
But I guess you'll never find out)
