Formed in 1996, Linkin Park rose to international fame with their debut studio album, Hybrid Theory (2000), which became certified Diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Released during the peak of the nu metal scene, the album's singles' heavy airplay on MTV led the singles "One Step Closer", "Crawling" and "In the End" all to chart highly on the US Mainstream Rock chart. The lattermost also crossed over to the nation's Billboard Hot 100. Their second album, Meteora (2003), continued the band's success. The band explored experimental sounds on their third album, Minutes to Midnight (2007). By the end of the decade, Linkin Park was among the most successful and popular rock acts.
The band continued to explore a wider variation of musical types on their fourth album, A Thousand Suns (2010), layering their music with more electronic sounds. The band's fifth album, Living Things (2012), combined musical elements from all of their previous records. Their sixth album, The Hunting Party (2014), returned to a heavier rock sound, and their seventh album, One More Light (2017), was a substantially more pop-oriented record. Linkin Park went on a hiatus when longtime lead vocalist Bennington died in July 2017. In April 2022, Shinoda revealed the band was neither working on new music nor planning on touring for the foreseeable future.
Linkin Park is among the best-selling bands of the 21st century and the world's best-selling music artists, having sold over 100 million records worldwide. They have won two Grammy Awards, six American Music Awards, two Billboard Music Awards, four MTV Video Music Awards, 10 MTV Europe Music Awards and three World Music Awards. In 2003, MTV2 named Linkin Park the sixth-greatest band of the music video era and the third-best of the new millennium. Billboard ranked Linkin Park No. 19 on the Best Artists of the Decade list. In 2012, the band was voted as the greatest artist of the 2000s in a Bracket Madness poll on VH1. In 2014, the band was declared as "The Biggest Rock Band in the World Right Now" by Kerrang!.

Yo, yo
Forfeit the game
Before somebody else
Takes you out of the frame
Puts your name to shame
Cover up your face
The pace is too fast
You just wonât last
You love the way I look at you
While taking pleasure in the awful things you put me through
You take away if I give in
My life, my pride is broken
You like to think youâre never wrong (You like to think youâre never wrong)
You have to act like youâre someone (You have to act like youâre someone)
You want someone to hurt like you (You want someone to hurt like you)
You want to share what youâve been through
You live what youâve learned
You love the things I say Iâll do
The way Iâll hurt myself again just to get back at you
You take away when I give in
My life, my pride is broken
You like to think youâre never wrong (You like to think youâre never wrong)
You have to act like youâre someone (You have to act like youâre someone)
You want someone to hurt like you (You want someone to hurt like you)
You want to share what youâve been through
You live what youâve learned
Yo, yo
Forfeit the game
Before somebody else
Takes you out of the frame
Puts your name to shame
Cover up your face
You canât run the race
The pace is too fast
You just wonât last
Forfeit the game
Before somebody else
Takes you out of the frame (frame)
Puts your name to shame
Cover up your face
(You) You canât run the race
The pace is too fast
You just wonât last
You like to think youâre never wrong (You like to think youâre never wrong)

You live what youâve learned
The song Forfeit by Linkin Park featuring Jay Gordon of Orgy is about forfeiting the game of life before someone else takes you out of the frame and puts your name to shame. The lyrics warn against trying to keep up with the pace of others and pretending to be someone you're not, at the expense of your own life and pride. The chorus emphasizes the idea of forfeiting the game before it's too late and covering up your face to avoid the consequences of your actions.
The verses delve into the toxic relationship between the two individuals, with one person taking pleasure in the awful things they put the other through and wanting them to experience the same pain. The other person constantly tries to appease their partner by giving in, but ultimately ends up breaking their own pride and sense of self-worth. The lyrics reveal the cycle of hurt and pain that characterizes their relationship, with both parties being unable to break free from it.
Overall, the song delivers a powerful message of self-preservation and not letting others dictate your life. The idea of forfeiting the game may seem defeatist, but it's actually an empowering stance that allows individuals to take control of their own lives and avoid being taken down by others.

Hybrid Theory is a absolute classic. Those who say that it's an album that is filled with teen angst are dead wrong. I'm nearing my thirties and I still find this album to be a timeless classic and is adored by all ages
@JackPoppy
I am in my thirties, and let me tell you, this album still rings true as an anthem of my generation sending a message to the boomers in my life. They like to think they're never wrong, they like someone to hurt like they do. When faced with compassion, they lash out.
Yes, our generation created emo music, but it was never meant as self pity; it was meant as a message for love and compassion.
@razkable
Hybrid theory is one of the best albums ever not just cause of all the hits but the effort that went into every song...the instruments the metal screech and hip hop infusions with record scratching and piano deserves more credit for changing the genre...anyone saying it's just angst underrated the effort put into each unique sound..meteora is lazier and thus can get that criticism....but hybrid theory was everyone being introduced to linkin park...and it's perfect for the new millieuim as a new wave of music
@WFly101
â@@JackPoppy this is Nu Metal not Emo lol
@phanatic215
â@@JackPoppyI saw a dude in the market with an LP shirt on, and I said Hybrid Theory still bangs to this day. We stood there next to the apples and talked about how awesome Linkin Park was for 20 minutes. Complete stranger, but we bonded over music.
