Linkin Park Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In the golden morning

Listening to the water run through my fingers and down my hands
In the golden color of dawn, I remember back where this began
Everybody else stretched their necks to catch a glimpse of what was hid
Then they all tried their best to take it away and that′s just what they did

In the golden morning
Everything else goes away, making myself a better day
As the clouds are forming
Everything else goes away, taking what's mine back today

I am your perfect confidence
I am your childish innocence
I am what you pretend to be
Tomorrow will come to take all these things with me

The water runs through my fingers and down my hands
In the cool color of dawn, taking this back around to where it began
Thinking that I wish that everybody I know could see the things I do
And know everything I did, it wasn′t for me, it was for you

In the winter morning
Everything else has gone away, making ourselves a better day
As the clouds are storming
Everything else has gone away, taking what's ours back today

I am your perfect confidence
I am your childish innocence

I am what you pretend to be
Tomorrow will come to take all these things with me, me, me

Overall Meaning

The song "Shifter" by Linkin Park is a reflective piece that begins with the singer enjoying a serene moment as he listens to the sound of water running through his hands. He reminisces on where his journey started and how people have tried to take away what is his. He then transitions to the chorus where he asserts that in moments like this, everything else goes away and he becomes a better version of himself. He repeats this sentiment once again, only this time during winter, and places a sense of ownership on this feeling, stating that he is taking back what is his.

The bridge of the song identifies the singer as a representation of the things the listener desires or pretends to be. The line "Tomorrow will come to take all these things with me" indicates that these aspects of the listener will fade away as time goes by. In essence, the singer is reminding the listener not to take for granted the moments where everything goes away and they can be their best selves.

A great observation. Their lyrics, power sound, it put into words and sound what so many of us from troubled families have locked inside our heads.

I just wish I knew Chester. He was far from alone, as so many of us have those ugly memories haunting us still. There may be, " a million stars" but there are also a million reasons why we have to strive to live our lives. Serve our purposes. We survived and we must be carrying on because the light inside of us was meant to shine.

Too many monsters here worked hard to destroy us but when we overcome? They are the losers.

A brilliant Professor told me that if good people do not do the work? Only the bad ones will.

Think of all of the bands who became famous selling garbage music. No real substance. Sorry, not sorry but too much of it? I mean Eddie Van Halen played a mean guitar but songs like, Panama? Aerosmiths, Love in an Elevator? Aerosmith offers some good songs but mostly empty. Too much of the hair bands has nothing worth listening to. At least it can be said, GunsNRoses wrote real lyrics and an amazing sound. They joined Metallica in giving us music that matters. Of course, Queen, still rocking, gave us serious music with some comedic flare fun.

Linkin Park's music exposes our weakness, absolutely. It doesn't leave us though in the pits of hell. It is a light shining out there meant to also give us hope and add value to our lives. Few, artists have that collective gift. Linkin Park's music rules among the very best.😊

LYRICS

(In the golden morning)

Listening to the water
running through my fingers
and down my hands
In the golden color of dawn
I remember back where this began
Everybody else stretched their necks
to catch a glimpse of what was hid
Then they all tried their best to take it away
and that's just what they did

(In the golden morning)
Everything else goes away
Making myself a better day
(As the clouds are forming)
Everything else goes away
Taking what's mine back today

I am your perfect confidence
I am your childish innocence
I am what you pretend to be
And tomorrow will come
to take all these things with me

The water runs through my fingers
and down my hands
In the cool color of dawn
Taking this back around where it began
Thinking that I wish everybody I know
Could see the things I do
And know everything I did
It wasn't for me, it was for you

(In the winter morning)
Everything else is gone away
Making ourselves a better day
(As the clouds are storming)
Everything else is gone away
Taking what's ours back today

I am your perfect confidence
I am your childish innocence
I am what you pretend to be
And tomorrow will come
to take all these things with me

No kidding

@thatjdmfd

It might actually be real close in the discussion. I know musical taste is really subjective, but their production, their music quality and their live performances are up to par with the best bands ever imo.

It's such a beautiful tune. I love the music, and agree that so many of these demo tracks are worthy of being recognized as a different song.
